Obituary of Agnes N. Makela Houghton Agnes N. Makela, 80, a resident of the Douglas House Apartments and former White Pine resident passed away Wednesday morning October 29, 2008, at the Houghton County Medical care Facility in Hancock where she had been a patient for the past 4 weeks. She was born on March 31, 1928, in Liminga, a daughter of the late John and Hannah (Lustig) Porkka. As a child Agnes attended the Redridge School and was a graduated of the Houghton High School with the class of 1946. She then graduated from Soumi College with a Secretarial degree. Agnes has resided in Liminga, Detroit, Hancock, White Pine, and for the past 20 years has made her home at the Douglas House Apartments in Houghton. On January 21, 1950 she was united in marriage to Wilhart Makela and he preceded her in death on February 4, 1988. Mrs. Makela was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton. While residing in the Detroit area Agnes had worked for Ford Motor Company as a Secretary. Agnes was an avid basketball fan following her grandchildren through high school & college sports programs. She taught her family many of the finnish food favorites Panakka, Fila, & Korpu(her favorite snack) Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, her sister Hilma Kilpela, and her brothers Abel, William, Wesley, Raymond & Emil. Surviving are: Her children: Patricia (Joseph) Juno of Ironwood, MI Steven (Susan) Makela of Ishpeming Her grandchildren: Jamie Juno, Jason Juno, Joshua Makela, Daniel Makela, and Deanna Makela. Her sisters: Milma Carlson of Houghton Edna Emki of Sterling Heights, MI Her brother: Alfred Porkka of Arizona Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins Funeral services for Agnes will be held 5 pm Saturday November 1, 2008, at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton with Richard Eskola to officiate. Burial will be in the Liminga Cemetery of Hancock. Friends may call on Saturday November 1, 2008, from 4 pm until time of services at the church.
