Obituary of Albert Niemi MR Atlantic Mine Albert William "Bill" Niemi, 71, a resident of Atlantic Mine and former area businessman passed away Thursday morning November 7, 2013, at home following a short battle with cancer. He was born on February 15, 1942, in Detroit, MI, a son of the late Albert C. and Felma (Makela) Niemi. Bill was raised in Southfield, MI, and graduated from the Southfield High School with the class of 1960. On February 24, 1962, he was united in marriage to the former Anne Heinonen. The couple resided in the Southfield and Brighton area until 1978 when they moved to make their home in Atlantic Mine. Bill had worked for American Motor Company, Ford Motor Company while residing in Southfield and Brighton. Locally, Bill had owned and operated Portage Equipment in Houghton for 12 years, retiring in 1990. He then began his favorite job of driving school bus part time for the Copper County Intermediate School District, which he did for 10 years. Mr. Niemi was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton and he enjoyed spending time with his family. Preceding him in death was his grandson Darin William Keranen, his parents, his sister Nancy Talick and his brother Edward Niemi. Surviving are: His wife Anne Niemi of Atlantic Mine His children: James Niemi of Brighton, MI Jeffrey (Debra) Niemi of Brighton, MI Joel (Lisa) Niemi of Hartland, MI Margaret (Aaron) Kangas of Calumet Andrew Niemi of Atlantic Mine Steven (Elona) Niemi of Howell, MI Heidi (Michael) Keranen of Howell, MI 51 grandchildren & 4 great grandchildren His sister: Marilyn (Gordon) Heinonen of Houghton Canal His in-laws: John (Carol) Heinonen Mary (Peter) Kiilunen Judy (Michael) Johnson Nancy (Don) Tulkki Fred (Anne) Heinonen Jean (Chuck) Aho Linda (Joe) Kilpela Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins Funeral services for Bill will be held 11 am Saturday November 9, 2013, at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton with Richard Eskola to officiate. Burial will be in the Atlantic Mine Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday November 8, 2013, from 4 to 8 pm and on Saturday from 10 am until time of services at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton.
