Obituary of Alfie L. Kemppainen Calumet Alfie L. Kemppainen, 88, a resident of Boundary St., Calumet and former Salo resident passed away at his home in Calumet January 1, 2006, from an apparent heart attack. He was born on February 21, 1917, in Hancock a son of the late William and Elina Susanna (Puska) Kemppainen. As a child he moved to Salo with his family and attended the Salo School. Aflie had worked as a miner before moving from Salo to the Detroit area to work in the auto industry, moving back to Salo in 1952 to take over the family farm. Alfie was a well known and respected farmer in the Salo area. He retired in 1978, and moved to Calumet. On June 23, 1945, he was united in marriage to the former Alice Maki and she preceded him in death on July 13, 1995. Mr. Kemppainen was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock. While living in Salo Alfie was active with Hancock Township serving as a Trustee for many years, and also Treasurer for the Township. Alfie touched the lives of many people he will be fondly remembered and sadly missed. Also preceding him in death were 2 Brothers, Raymond & Carl, and 2 Sisters: Elma Hojya & Martha Rothenberger. Surviving are: 1 Son: James (Michele) Kemppainen of Hancock 2 Grandchildren: Julie (James) Fenton of Salo Andrew (Joanie) Kemppainen of Mason, OH 3 Great Grandchildren: Abigail Fenton, Olivia Kemppainen & Andrew Kemppainen, Jr. 2 Brothers: Rev. Rudolph (Darley) Kemppainen of Ishpeming Roy (Alice) Kemppainen of Round Lake Beach, IL Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins Funeral services for Alfie will be held 3 P.M. Wednesday January 4, 2006, at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock with Revs. Jimalee Jones and Rudy Kemppainen to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery of Calumet.
