Obituary of Barbara Jean Turpeinen Houghton/Alston Barbara J. (Peter) Turpeinen, 64, a resident of Lakeshore Dr., Houghton, passed away suddenly early Tuesday morning December 23, 2008, at the Portage Hospital in Hancock. She was born on February 7, 1944, in Elo, MI, a daughter of the late Isaac and Senia (Juntunen) Karsama. She was a graduate of the Doelle School with the class of 1961. On December 9, 1961, she was united in marriage to Peter Turpeinen and recently celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary with family. Together they have resided and raised their children in Alston, and then in 1992 built their summer home in Houghton. Mrs. Turpeinen was a member of the Mission United Lutheran Church of Pelkie, and a former member of the Laird Township Fire Department Auxiliary, and a former member of the Northern Snow Flyers Snowmobile Club. Barb looked forward to traveling to Ft. Myers, FL in the winters, and spending time with her family and loved ones. Over the last two years, she enjoyed her great-grand puppies, chihuahuas Tagg and Chloe, who cheerfully greeted her each day. Her smile, sense of humor, and overwhelming FInninsh Sisu will forever be left with those that knew her. Preceding her in death were her son Greg, her grand-daughter Erika, her brothers Randy, Gordon, and Calvin, and her sister Stella. Surviving are her devoted and loving husband, Peter Turpeinen of Houghton. Daughter, Kim Turpeinen of Houghton; grandchildren, Danielle Borel, Paige Borel, and Dylan Borel of Houghton. Her "adopted" son, Jim Fedie and family of Nisula. Her brother, Bruce Karsama of Clarkston, MI. Her sister Muriel (Keith Halls) Ruonavar of Hancock. And several nephews, nieces, and cousins. Funeral services for Barbara will be held at 4 pm Sunday, December 28, 2008 at Mission United Lutheran Church of Pelkie with Rev. John Autio to officiate. Spring burial will be held in the Alston Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday, December 27, 2008, from 4 to 8 pm at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock and on Sunday from 3 pm until time of services at the church.
