Obituary of Barton Ray Luoma Chassell Barton R. Luoma, 50, a resident of Hancock St., Chassell passed away at home Friday October 28, 2005, with his loving family at his side, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Marquette on August 18, 1955, a son of Alma (Koski) Luoma and the late Reino Luoma. Barton attended school in Marquette. From high school Barton joined the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. After the service he was employed for several years at the Mather B Mine until its closing. Mr. Luoma then enrolled at the Jacobetti Skill Center and graduated from the Culinary Arts program. Later he enrolled in the corrections officers training program at Northern Michigan University. In 1987 he started working at the Marquette Branch Prison; transferring to Baraga Maximum Security Prison in 1992, and had been employed there since illness forced his retirement. On April 12, 2002 he was united in marriage to the former Kristen Panke. Barton had attended church services at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Houghton and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell. Barton loved the outdoors; he was an avid sportsman with his favorite being hunting, fishing and spending time at camp. Surviving are: His wife Kristen Luoma 2 Daughters: Mariann Luoma and friend Andy of Gwinn Olivia Luoma of Chassell His Mother: Alma Luoma of Spring Hill, Florida One Brother: John (Beverly) Luoma of Spring Hill, Florida 2 Nieces: Amy and Abbie of Spring Hill, Florida Several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles A celebration of Barton's life will be held this Wednesday November 2, 2005, at 1 P.M. in the Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church of Houghton with Rev. Glenn Schwanke to officiate. The family suggests casual attire for those attending the Celebration in a way of honoring Barton. Burial will be in the Chassell Cemetery at a later date. The family will greet friends and relatives on Wednesday from 12 Noon until time of services at the church. The family invites all to join them Wednesday evening at the Otter Lake Sportsman club in Tapiola to pass a dish and stories about Barton.
