Obituary of Bernice Maki CHASSELL Bernice Rose Samuelson Maki, 85, lovingly known as "Auntie Bun" passed into the Loving Arms of our Lord on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at her home, surrounded by her children. Bernice was born on February 11, 1925 in Severville/Painesdale, Michigan a daughter to the late Godfrey & Rose (Recore) Samuelson. She was a graduate of Jeffers High School. She married Edward George Maki on July 25, 1945 and they lived in Pelkie where Bernice was a cook at the Pelkie School and worked in the family business, Maki's General Store. In 1955 they moved downstate and lived in Livonia. She received her certificate of Nursing Home Administration from the University of Detroit at the age of 44 and managed 2 nursing homes in Detroit until their retirement in 1988 when they eagerly and happily moved back to the U.P., making their home in Chassell. Her retirement years were busy being active at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 6507 in Chassell. Her passions were cooking and crocheting. No one left her home hungry and everyone has samples of her handwork. She loved dancing and frequented the Eagles of South Range, always dressed in matching everything and usually in purple. She will be so missed but her legacy of true belief in our Lord and how to be compassionate and caring of every person will live on through her influence on all our lives. . She was preceded in death by her husband Eddie in 1989, her parents within 1/2hour of each other in 1958, 2 brothers Godfrey in 1966 and Eddie in 2008, sister - Rochelle in 1977, sisters-in-law Edith Kallungi and Ruth Kinnunen joined our Lord in 2010. Surviving are a daughter - Judy (Dennis) Karvakko of Klingville, a son - Gary (Mary Jo) Maki of Brighton; grandchildren - Edward (Angie) Maki, Michelle (Bill) Lucas, Brian & Aaron Karvakko, Scott (Vicki) Maki. She has 6 very precious great-grandchildren - Jacob, Alex, Maia, Brook, Seth and Aly. Also surviving a brother-in-law - Leon Kallungi of Tapiola and sisters-in-law - Betty Samuelson of Houghton, Pat & Lowell Kolehmainen of Dollar Bay, Elaine (Jim) Weiland of Novi, Jean (Arvo) Jukkala of Gaylord. There are also many nieces, nephews & godchildren, each one hold a special place in her heart. Funeral Services for Mrs. Maki will be held 1 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chassell with Rev. Ron Strobel to officiate. Visitation will be on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Chassell, where the Chassell VFW Ladies Auxiliary will hold a memorial service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held 1 hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be in the Pelkie Cemetery.
