Obituary of Bernice Niemi ToivolaBernice Niemi, 79, a resident of Toivola, passed away Saturday evening January 29, 2011, at the Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium, following a short illness.She was born on March 4, 1931, in Calumet, MI. As a child, she moved to Toivola and attended the Jeffers School.In 1949, she was united in marriage to Charles Niemi. Together the couple owned and operated the Toivola Service and Lunch. They then resided in Alaska for a few years and then Wyoming for ten years before returning to make their home in Toivola for the past 23 years. Charles preceded Bernice in death in 2006.Mrs. Niemi attended the Toivola Apostolic Lutheran Church. She loved to spend time at the family cottage in Misery Bay.Preceding her in death were her husband, her daughter Patricia Niemi, her son Lee Niemi and her parents Leonard and Tillie Jarvela.Surviving are: Her children: Gail (Gary) Jordon of Atlantic MineGary Niemi of South RangePhyllis (Chris) Lanctot of PainesdaleHer grandchildren: Shelly Sivonen, Cory Sivonen, Ryan (Lisa) Wiitala, Fawn Wiitala & Allen Wiitala7 great grandchildrenHer sisters & brother:Elaine (Ernest) Jarvela of ToivolaMarlene (Rube) Vollrath of Dollar Bay Ron (Sharon) Jarvela of ToivolaNumerous nieces, nephews, and cousinsAs requested, a graveside service for Bernice will be held later this spring in the Toivola Cemetery with Pastor Ernest Bylkas III to officiate.To view Bernice's obituary or to send condolences to the family please visit www.memorialchapel.net.
