Bertha H. (James) Mattila, 86, a resident of Suo Loop Rd., Suo District, passed away at her home Sunday afternoon, September 24, 2006, following a lengthy illness.
She was born on May 11, 1920, in Painesdale, a daughter of the late Werner and Aune (Heionen) Maki. As a child, she moved to Suo District and has resided there since.
On August 14, 1937, she was united in marriage to James S. Mattila.
Bertha was a member of the Tapiola Apostolic Lutheran Church. Bertha will always be remembered for the deep love she had for her family & church.
Preceding her in death were her parents and a step-sister: Syme Youngquist.

Mattila of Suo District 13 children: James (Karen) Mattila of Toivola, Shirley Keranen of Sussex, WI, Robert (Betty) Mattila of Painesdale, Barbara Mattila of Houghton, Carl Mattila of Chassell, Carol (Gary) Johnson of Milford, Virginia (Paul) Luoma of Hurontown, Violet (Jim) Medhurst of Sussex, WI, Vivien (Jon) Grischke of Leesburg, VA, Ruth (Tom) Mackrain of Chassell, Michael (Vicky) Mattila of Houghton, Vicky (Ken) Kline of Wallace, MI, Laura (Sam) Christoff of Clarkston, MI; 43 Grandchildren and 65 Great Grandchildren; 1 Sister, Beatrice Mattila of Sussex, WI: numerous nieces and nephews
Funeral services for Bertha will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, September 30, 2006, in the Tapiola Apostolic Lutheran Church of Tapiola, with Pastors Kenneth Storm and Rodney Johnson to officiate. Burial will be in the Toivola Cemetery.
Friends may call on Friday, September 29, 2006, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock from 3 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church.
In lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorials may be given to the Tapiola Apostolic Lutheran Church Roof Fund, Children's Miracle Network, or the charity of one's choice.
