Oskar
Betty H Ruohonen, 90, of Oskar passed away Saturday, November 18, at Portage Pointe where
she was a resident.
Betty was born on June 19, 1933, in Paavola to the late Hannah (Lasanen) and Andrew
Leinonen. She grew up in Paavola and attended the local schools, graduating from Hancock
Central High School in 1952 as the Salutatorian of her class.
Betty worked at Superior National Bank, served as the Stanton Township Treasurer for 26 years
and retired from the Stanton Township School District after working there for 26 years.
On May 28, 1955, Betty married Norman Ruohonen in Hancock. They made their home in
Oskar and celebrated 45 years of marriage before Norman passed away in 2000.
Betty is survived by: Her son, Kevin of Oskar and his family, Her daughter, Susan (Michael Torrey) Ruohonen
of Chicago, Her daughter, Karyn (John) Rudak of Oskar Bay and their children, Jack and Katia; Special
Niece Carole Ahola; Special Friend Barbara Jukuri; Sister in Law Nona Ruohonen; Several nieces, nephews,
cousins, friends and cousins in Finland.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Norman, her parents and her siblings, her
husband’s siblings and many dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at 12:00 noon at Zion Lutheran Church in
Hancock with visitation from 10 am until the time of services.
The family would like to thank the staff at Portage Pointe for being so loving and kind with their
care of Betty.
