Betty Somero (Paavola)

Obituary of Betty Mae Somero Betty M. Somero, 85 of Hancock died Monday, March 31, 2014, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock. She was born in Trimountain to Arvid and Emma (Krapu) Paavola on May 27, 1928 and attended the local schools. Betty was preceded in death by her first husband, Toivo Wirtanen who died in June of 1992 and her son Robert Wirtanen, who died in January of 1995. Betty worked as a cook for many years at the Elders Home in Calumet where she was known for making the best pasties around. She was also talented in the craft of crocheting and created many pieces of clothing and afghans for friends and family over the years. Betty was remarried in 1994 to Joseph Somero, who died in 1999. Also preceding her in death were her parents and four brothers: Reuben, Norman, Andrew, and Eugene. Surviving Betty are four grandchildren: Tiffani, Laani, Belinda, and Danielle Wirtanen, one great granddaughter, April Thompson, her nephew Reuben "Auchie" Paavola, her good friend Barbara Kenny, and her beloved cat, Millie A memorial service will be held at a later date.
