Obituary of Carl Kenneth Nelson Hancock Carl K. Nelson, 73, a resident of Hancock passed away Thursday morning February 16, 2012, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born June 20, 1937, in Laurium, to the late Elwood and Mary (Tapani) Nelson. At a young age, the family moved to Hancock where he attended the local schools, graduating from Hancock High School in 1956. Upon graduating, he joined the United States Navy and after serving his country he returned home to work for Calumet & Hecla Mining Company, as an electrician. On October 20, 1962, he was united in marriage to the former Mary St. Amour from Chassell at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Houghton. When the mines closed in 1969, the couple moved to Ishpeming where he was employed at Northern Electric Company, The Cleveland Cliff's Iron Company and the Ropes Gold Mine. In 1989, he was employed for the United States Department of Labor Mine Safety and Health Administration retiring in 2002. Carl then became a self-employed electrical contractor. In January of 2008 he moved with his wife back to Hancock to be closer to family. Preceding him in death were four daughters, his parents, and his brother Gordon. Surviving are: His wife: Mary Nelson of Hancock His daughter: Mary (Ken) Tumelson of South Bend, IN His grandchildren: Dakota, Eryn and Dylan all of South Bend, IN His brothers: William (Donna) Nelson of Ahmeek Raymond Nelson of Calumet Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins As requested, no visitation or service will be held for Carl.
