Obituary of Doris Marie Niemela Chassell Doris Marie Niemela, 84, a former resident of Chassell passed away Wednesday morning February 22, 2017, at the Winona House of Portage Pointe in Hancock where she had been residing for the past fifteen months. She was born on April 10, 1932, in Ewen, MI, a daughter of the late Hubert Swande and Olga (Sirvio) Anderson. Doris was raised in Ewen where she graduated from the Ewen High School in 1950 as the class valedictorian. She then moved to the Detroit area. On September 14, 1951, she was united in marriage to Leo Niemela. Since 1968, she has made her home in Chassell. Mrs. Niemela was a member of the Chassell Apostolic Lutheran Church. She retired from the Michigan Tech Forestry Service. Preceding her in death were her husband and two grandchildren, Kellie and Charity. Surviving are: Her children: Carol (Robert) Salmi of Chassell Jerome (Rebecca) Niemela of Chassell Mark (Eva) Niemela of Keweenaw Bay Lois (Albert) Matson of Yacolt, WA 39 Grandchildren, 94 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild Her sisters & brothers: Edith (David) Waineo of Howell, MIWilliam (Jean) Anderson of New Hudson, MI Corrine (David) Coponen of Chassell, MI Robert (Eileen) Anderson of Greer, SC Barbara (Ralph) Somero of New Ipswich, NH Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins Funeral service for Doris will be held 12 pm Saturday March 4, 2017, at the Chassell Apostolic Lutheran Church with Don Holombo to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Chassell Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday March 3, 2017, from 4 to 8 pm at the Memorial Chapel Funeral home of Chassell and on Saturday March 4, 2017, from 11 am until time of services at the church.
