Obituary of Dorothy Love HoughtonDorothy Helen Cochrane Courtney Love, 89, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at Omega House in Houghton, Michigan.Dorothy was born on August 15, 1923 in Warsaw, Poland, to Leon Cochrane, a US trade diplomat stationed in Poland who later served in Washington, DC and helped found the Social Security system, and Irene Cochrane (nee Kowalski), who coordinated assistance for thousands of Polish refugees after WWII once the couple returned to the states.Graduating from Washington DC's Central High School in 1941, she also attended George Washington University before working at Look Magazine's offices on both coasts. She first married Howard Courtney in 1946. Dorothy met her second husband, English Professor George Love, at American University in Washington, DC and they married 1962 prior to returning to Love's home in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.Dorothy worked at Michigan Technological University's Alumni Office until she retired in 1984. She was active in the League of Women voters and the Democratic Party for many years. Dorothy was a member of the Houghton Planning Commission for 7 years then was elected to the Houghton City Council for 20 years from 1982 through 2002. On the city council she helped coordinate many of the downtown improvement projects, which won Houghton the Michigan "Community of Economic Excellence" award for 1987-1989.Dorothy believed in supporting worthy organizations and donated to the Pine Mountain Music Festival, Little Brothers, Quincy Mine, Omega House, Pubic Radio and Public TV, among many others in the area.Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband George Love and her sister Molly. She is survived by her son Howard "Sandy" Courtney, Jr. and wife Victoria "Tory" of Houghton, MI and Sedgewickville, MO, and her brother Jack Cochrane and wife June of Florence, SC.Dorothy was a founding congregation member of the Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Houghton and requested the memorial donations be made to the Fellowship.
