Obituary of Dorothy Dunnebacke MRS HoughtonDorothy L. (Roy) Dunnebacke, 76, a resident of Houghton passed away Thursday, January 16, 2014, at the Marquette General Hospital after an extended rehabilitation from a stroke she suffered in Phoenix, AZ in 2008. Dorothy had also been a resident of Portage Pointe nursing home since May 2013.She was born on March 19, 1937 in Hancock, daughter of the late Leo H. Roy and Dorothy L. (MacDonald) Roy of Hancock. The Roys owned and operated the Leo H. Roy Insurance Company on Quincy Street in Hancock for over 50 years. The Hon. Leo H. Roy also served as State Senator representing the Keweenaw area for 10 years.Dorothy graduated Hancock Central High School with the class of 1955. She attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, earning an Associate's degree in Fashion Design & Merchandising and worked for a brief time in the fashion industry in New York City. She later attended Michigan State University and Michigan Tech receiving her Bachelor's degree in Education. She taught kindergarten and elementary school at Houghton and Chassell elementary schools. She also served 13 years as co-Director of the religious education program at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Houghton.On September 29, 1961, she married Richard T. Dunnebacke of Marquette at St. Joseph's Church in Hancock. Richard is a 1955 Michigan Tech graduate in Mechanical Engineering and served professional careers in Michigan Tech administration and as Executive Director of Operation Action U.P. The couple celebrated their 50th anniversary in September 2011, renewing their Catholic wedding vows in front of many long-standing friends and family, most of whom had been present at their wedding. They have two children, son, Richard R. Dunnebacke and daughter, Lisa A. Dunnebacke.Throughout her life, Dorothy was very active in community service. She was most noted for her involvement with organizing the "Memory Lane" exhibits at the Hancock Central High School reunions. She was also an active member of the PEO sisterhood, American Association of University Women, Tech Wives, and planned a multitude of successful events and parties for the Miscowaubik Club in Calumet.Dorothy and Richard spent their winters in Arizona. While in Arizona, Dorothy flourished in artistic endeavors, including ceramics, basket making, beading, textiles, and painting. She also enjoyed table decorating for organizations, weddings, and banquets.Surviving are: her husband, Richard T. Dunnebacke of Houghton; son, Richard R. (Kim) Dunnebacke of Traverse City; and daughter, Lisa A. Dunnebacke of Houghton; brothers: Robert (Mary) Roy of Hancock and Donald Roy of Houghton.A Mass of Christian burial for Dorothy will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 11:00 AM at St. Ignatius Loyal Catholic Church in Houghton.
