Douglas “Doug” Morin passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 4,
2026, at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital after a short illness.

Doug was born on December 31, 1933, in Beacon Hill to Albert and
Wilhelmina (Tapio) Morin. He attended Stanton Township Schools and
graduated from Houghton High School in 1951.

Doug was a man of strong faith whose kindness and genuine care left
lasting impressions on everyone he met. He was quick-witted and always
ready to offer a greeting or words of encouragement to friends,
family, and neighbors alike.

Doug had a lifelong love of sports—especially baseball, hockey, and
golf. A talented athlete, he excelled at baseball and even received an
offered from the minor leagues, which he humbly declined. His passion
for sports extended well beyond playing; he dedicated many years to
coaching youth baseball and hockey, helping to establish the hockey
program at Jeffers High School, where he also served as the team’s
timekeeper. In the 1990s, Doug shared his enthusiasm for the game of
golf by working with young players at Wyandotte Hills Golf Course. He
remained active in sports throughout his life and was eagerly waiting
for the golf season to begin this spring.

Doug was drafted into the U.S. Army and served with the 25th
Infantry Division in post-war Korea and later in Hawaii. In May of 2017
he was honored to take part in the Korean War Veterans Honor Flight
with his nephew — an experience he deeply treasured.

He was the first in his family to attend college, earning his degree in
secondary education from Northern Michigan University in 1962,
followed by a master’s degree from NMU later in his career. Doug
began teaching at Jeffers High School and concluded his academic
career at Suomi College, retiring in 1992. After retirement, he
continued to stay active in the community as a real estate agent with
Century 21 North Country and later North Wind Real Estate.

On July 14, 1956, Doug married his high school sweetheart, Ann
Ruohonen. The couple lived in Hancock and Marquette before settling in
South Range, where they raised four children. Doug and Ann shared 25
wonderful years together before her sudden passing in 1981.

Years later, Doug found love again—on the golf course—when he met
Anne Jurmu Laurila. They were married on April 2, 2001.

Doug is survived by his loving wife, Anne; his children, Michael
(Jeanne) Morin and their children, David, Katie (Michael), and Jessica;
Patrick Morin; Julie (Scott) Pecotte and their children, Sam (Nash)
Katz, Kirkie, and Gabby; and Lisa (Joe) Pyykkonen and their children
Brendan and Alexis (Mitchel) Slattery; his great-granddaughters, Anna
and Sophie Katz. He is also survived by his stepchildren Erick (Kelly)
Laurila and daughter Maggie; Steve (Tina) Laurila and daughters Claire
and Jocelyn; Marty (Vanessa) Laurila and daughters Giselle and
Mariska; and Brian Laurila.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann; his son, Thomas
David; his parents; his brothers Albert Jr., Earl, and Kenneth Morin;
his sisters Ellen Salinas, Leona Burkman, and Lucille Marchand; and
many beloved in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday,
April 13, 2026, at Holy Family Catholic Church in South Range.
Visitation will take place at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the
time of service. Spring burial will be in Mt. View Cemetery, South
Range.
