Obituary of Elsa Lystila Hancock Elsa J. Lystila, 85, a former resident of W. Quincy St., Hancock, passed away Sunday morning May 28, 2006, at Portage Pointe (Senior Living Community) of Hancock, where she had been a resident patient for the past 3 years. The former Elsa Jutila was born on January 16, 1921, in Hubbell, a daughter of the late Michael and Alida (Anttila) Jutila. She attended the Hubbell grade school and was a graduate of the Lake Linden-Hubbell High School with the Class of 1939. She then attended the St, Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in Hancock, graduating in 1943. She worked at the former Copper Country Tuberculosis Sanitarium in Hancock, from 1943 until till it's closing in 1967. She later was a nurse at Soumi College from 1967, until her retirement in 1971. She retired her nursing License in 2001. On September 11, 1948, she was united in marriage to Bernard Huss, and he preceded her in death on August 18, 1969, she later married Reino Lystila on May 25, 1971, and he preceded her in death on January 31, 1981. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock, where she was active in the quilting group and the chairperson of the Social Ministry Committee of the church for many years. Elsa was a former member of the Alumni Association of the St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing, and was active with the XYZ club and helping with Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly. Elsa was gifted with a wonderful sense of humor and love of her family and friends. She was also preceded in death by her parents, 5 sisters, and 7 Brothers. She is survived by sister-in-laws: Vieno Jutila of La Mesa, CA Helen Jutila of Hancock, MI Lyla Lystila of South Range, MI Charleen Ahola, Ed, Bonnie & Peg Longnecker were Elsa's family and were among her special friends. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins Funeral services for Elsa will be held 1 P.M. Wednesday May 31, 2006 in the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock with Revs. Susan Odegard and Jimalee Jones to officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton. Friends may call at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock from 5 to 7 P.M. on Tuesday and 1 hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy the family suggests memorials be given to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock, Finlandia University's Nursing program or Portage Pointe.
