Eva Kariina Lindeman Houghton Eva Kariina (Ekonen) Lindeman, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend of many, was transported from earth to heaven on Monday, October 16, 2017. Eva was born in Ishpeming MI on January 17, 1926, daughter of Otto and Wilma (Lukkarinen) Ekonen. Many years of her childhood were spent in Paynesville MI, until her widowed mother remarried, and the family moved to Onnela MI. Eva was a graduate of the Houghton High School. On November 20, 1943, she wed Elvin Edwin Lindeman in Hancock MI, with Rev. Edward Isaac officiating. Elvin and Eva resided in Winona MI for the majority of their 61 years of marriage. As a widow, Eva later relocated to Houghton MI. Eva was preceded in death by her husband Elvin, on December 12, 2004. She also was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Wilma Ekonen, her second dad John Harma, her brothers George Ekonen and Ralph Ekonen, her sister Sarah Gilmore, and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Eva is survived by her children Deborah Jane (Mark) Anderson, Bernd R. (Vivien) Lindeman, grandson Jason Jacob Lindeman and great-grandson Jacob Remington Lindeman, step-grandchildren Michael Anderson and MacKenzie (nee Anderson) Marshburn, brothers Tauno Ekonen, Martin (Elizabeth) Ekonen, sister Maria (Norm) Durham, sister-in law Margaret Lindeman, and numerous nieces and nephews. Eva was a past member of First Lutheran Church in Winona MI, and at the time of her death was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock MI. Eva retired from the Elm River Township School (the "Winona" school), after 18 years of service as a teacher's aide. In retirement, Eva was a member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel ("MARSP"), and along with her husband Elvin, was a member of the Ontonagon Retirees Club (for former pulp mill employees). As one who always loved to be busy, Eva spent countless hours cooking/baking, gardening, and doing "handwork" (knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting, etc.). She loved working with children, and in addition to her job at the school, she served for many years as a Sunday school teacher, 4-H leader, and more. Most of all, though, Eva lovingly was the best wife and mother anyone ever could have wished for. The visitation and memorial service will take place at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock MI on Friday, October 20, 2017. Family visitation hours are from 9am-11am, with public visitation from 10am-11am. The memorial service will commence at 11am, followed by a luncheon at the church.
