Obituary of Florence Lassila Hancock Florence M. Lassila, 84, a resident of Hancock passed away Friday evening June 11, 2010, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock, where she had been a resident patient for the past 10 years. She was born on March 22, 1926, in Mason, MI, a daughter of the late Nickolas and Miina (Saari) Nelson. Florence was a graduate of the Dollar Bay High School with the class of 1944. Following high school, she moved to Hancock and began working for the Finnish Lutheran Book Concern. While working there, she met Norman Lassila and the couple was united in marriage on April 2, 1949. On December 14, 1994, Norman preceded her in death. Mrs. Lassila was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock, where she had taught Sunday School. Florence enjoyed drawing, painting, sewing, and working in her garden. Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, and her sisters, Martha Nelson, Marian Kangas, Ellen Zurcher, and Sylvia Hammond. Surviving are: Her children; Gerald (Pamela) Lassila of Palatine, IL Barbara Lassila of Hancock Her grandchildren; Cory and Lucas Lassila of Palatine, IL Her brother; Reino (Pat) Nelson of Boston Location Numerous nieces and nephews Funeral services for Florence will be held 11 am Wednesday June 16, 2010, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral home of Hancock with Rev. Jimalee Jones to officiate. Friends may call on Tuesday June 15, 2010, from 6 to 8 pm at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hancock and on Wednesday from 10 am until time of services.
