Walt Turino

Houghton

    Walt Turino, 74, a resident of Houghton passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at his home.

     He was born on December 10, 1948, in Ishpeming, MI, a son of the late Beryl and Leah (Juchemich) Turino.  Walt was raised in Negaunee and was a graduate of St. Paul Catholic School.  He then attended Michigan Technological University where he received a degree in Mathematics.

     Mr. Turino then began a career in the Houghton Portage Township Schools spanning 40 years teaching math, science, and computers and coaching boys and girls basketball.  He still kept active with the school by helping at basketball games running the clock and recording game statistics and even came back to substitute teach on occasion.

     Walt was an active member of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton.  He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed any time outdoors whether fly fishing, hunting or spending time at River Camp.

     Surviving are:

            His children: Jessica (Brian) Kernohan of Grawn, MI, Alicia (Nick) Harris of Rockford, MI, & Beryl (Tanya) Turino of North Pole, AK; His grandchildren: Elise, Caden, Kelsey, Brianna, Zephaniah, Richard, Emma and Beryl; His four great-grandchildren:  Lincoln, Weston, Zephaniah and Amelia; His siblings: Denise Beauchamp of Ishpeming, Vicki (John) Haupt of Ishpeming, Renee (Hugo) Lehto of L’Anse, Greg (Chris) Turino of DePere, WI, &  Michelle Collick of Ishpeming; Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins

     A Mass of Christian Burial for Walt will be held 1:00 pm Saturday, January 21, 2023, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton with Fr. John Martignon to officiate.

     Friends may call on Saturday, January 21, 2023, from 10:00 am until time of services at the church.

     In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorial contributions be given to St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton in memorial of Walt Turino.
