Obituary of Fredrick Jacob Ruohonen Oskar Fredrick "Ted" Ruohonen, 80, a resident of Oskar, passed away at his home on Friday October 24, 2008. He was born in Oskar on September 12, 1928, a son of the late Jacob & Edna (Dorvinen) Ruohonen and attended the Oskar School. He achieved his High School Diploma trough ICS. Fred retired from Michigan Technological University where he worked as Maintenance Foreman of the Residence Halls. Prior to that he worked as Maintenance Foreman at Portage View Hospital and was employed in numerous other trades. On August 20, 1955, he was united in marriage to the former Irene E. Lampinen in South Range. Fred was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Atlantic Mine. He was active on the Church Council and served as an usher for many years. Fred served for three years in the Air Force. He was a member of the South Range Eagles, the Alfred Erickson Post #186 American Legion of Hancock. He served for twenty years on the Stanton Twp. Fire Department, and was a member of the Stanton Senior Citizens. Fred loved gardening, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed spending time at his camp and watching his grandchildren play sports. Surviving are his wife Irene, a daughter Mary (Robert) Erva of Oskar, a son Michael (Beth) Ruohonen of Liminga, four grandchildren, Daniel and Amy Erva and Andrew and Laura Ruohonen, three sisters, Martha Hermanson of Portage Pointe, Mae Cobb of Hancock, and Aili (William) Dunstan of Houghton Canal, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins both in the U.S. and in Finland. Besides his parents, preceding him in death were three brothers, Hjalmer, Paul, and Peter, five sisters, Esther, Marie, Rose, Sylvia and Florence. The family would like to thank the staff of Marquette General Hospital, Portage Health Systems, and Keweenaw Home Nursing & Hospice for their kind and compassionate care. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Saturday November 1, 2008, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Atlantic Mine with Rev. Bucky Beach to officiate. Visitation will be two hour prior to services on Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the Oskar Cemetery.
