Gary Niemi

Obituary of Gary Niemi Toivola, Gary C. "Egu" Niemi, 62, a former resident of Toivola, passed away Monday afternoon January 19, 2015, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock. He was born on June 24, 1952, in Hancock, MI, a son of the late Charles and Bernice (Johnson) Niemi. Egu attended the Adams Township Schools. Following school, Egu had worked on the Alaskan Pipe Line for three years, Yalmer Mattila Contracting and Charles Niemi Logging until his poor health forced an early retirement. Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing pool, along with spending time visiting with his family and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother Lee and an infant sister Patricia. Surviving are: His sisters: Gail (Gary) Jordon of Atlantic Mine Phyllis (Christopher) Lanctot of Painesdale His nieces and nephews: Shelly Sivonen, Cory (Lourie) Sivonen, Ryan (Lisa) Wiitala, Fawn (Jeff) Wiitala and Allen (Jenny) Wiitala Several grandnieces, grandnephews, aunts, uncle and many friends. His former wife: Jayne Paavola of Calumet A graveside service for Gary will be held later this spring in the Toivola Cemetery. Gary's family would like to thank the Staff's of the Houghton County Medical Care Facility and Portage Hospice for the care given to Egu.
