Obituary of Gloria I. Smith Houghton Gloria I. Smith, 91, a long time Houghton resident passed away Sunday evening July 8, 2007, at Cypress Manor Nursing Home in Hancock where she had been a resident patient for over the past two months. She was born on July 19, 1915, in Hubbell a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Dubuque) O'Rourke. As a child she attended the Lake Linden Schools and graduated with the class of 1932. On June 19, 1937 she was united in marriage to Robert S. Smith in Detroit. The couple resided in Calumet for a short time before moving to Houghton in 1940, where she has made her home since. In October 1989, Robert preceded her in death. Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Ignatius Loyola Church of Houghton. She was a life member and past president of the St. Josephs Hospital Guild, a past member of the Ladies League at the Portage Lake Golf Course, and an avid bridge player. Gloria had worked for the Houghton County Health Department with the adult screening program retiring in the late 1970's. Preceding her in death was her husband, her parents, 2 brothers Morton O'Rourke and Gordon O'Rourke. Surviving are: Her children: Laurie (Dr. William) Clark of Syracuse, NY Robert Smith of Lincoln, CA Roger (Irene) Smith of Loomis, CA 6 Grandchildren: Michael Caspary, Jeffrey Caspary, Beth (William) Davis, Kathryn (Dylan) Dearborn, Leeanne (Fred) May, Robbin (Oke) Ransome 3 Step Grandchildren: Tracy (Jerry) Coleman, David (Janet) Moylan, Patrick Moylan 8 Great Grandchildren, 6 Step Great Grandchildren 2 Sisters: Eileen Assselin of the Bluffs Senior Living Community in Houghton Marie O'Rourke of Houghton A very special devoted niece: Mary Jane Jolly of Laurium Several nieces and nephews A mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday July 14, 2007, at St. Ignatius Loyola Church of Houghton with Fr. John Martignon to officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton. Friends may call on Saturday July 14, 2007, from 10 a.m. until time of services at St. Ignatius Loyola Church of Houghton. In lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy the family suggests that memorials may be given to the Omega House of Houghton or Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly.
