Obituary of Gordon C. Bekkala Tamarack City Gordon C. Bekkala, 80, a resident of Tamarack City and former Laurium resident passed away Thursday morning February 15, 2007, at the Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient for over the past 2 weeks. He was born on May 15, 1926, in Laurium, a son of the late Ralph and Sylvia (Arola) Bekkala. As a child Gordon attended and graduated from the Calumet Schools, he attended Soumi College (Finlandia University) and Ferris State University. Gordon worked as a CPA in various parts of the U.S. including Detroit, Alaska, Washington, Indiana, & had his own accounting business in Hancock for a number of years. Gordon also prospected for Uranium out West after the significance of Uranium became evident. Mr. Bekkala was a veteran having served in the United States Navy with the Shore Patrol and as a Radio Gunner on a dive bomber during W.W.II. He was an avid hunter & fisherman while he resided in the Upper Peninsula and out West. Gordon was always aware of political & international events and also followed the stock market. Preceding him in death were his parents, and a brother Kenneth. Surviving are: A sister: Bernice (Dave) McCullough of Downey, CA 4 Brothers: Ralph (Jill) Bekkala of Reford, MI Ronald Bekkala of Waterford, MI John (Sarah) Bekkala of Chassell, MI Bruce (Mary) Bekkala of Laurium, MI Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins Funeral services for Gordon will be held 4 p.m. Saturday February 17, 2007, in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Chassell with Reuben Anderson to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery of Calumet. Friends may call on Saturday from 3 p.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
