Obituary of Gordon A. Lorasch Farmington, New Mexico Gordon Anthony Lorasch, "Gordy" 91, retired Postmaster of Hancock, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, September 21st at San Juan Regional Medical Center, Farmington, New Mexico. Gordy was born June 27th 1917 in Houghton, Michigan to Anthony F. Lorasch and Grace Tredray. He graduated from St. Patrick's Catholic School in 1936, then worked for Mattson Bottling Works and enlisted into the United States Army with the 107th Engineers. Gordon married Edna Hayrynen of Toivola, Michigan November 23, 1942 in Ft. Hancock, New Jersey. They were married for 57 years; Edna preceded Gordy in death on May 26th, 2000. Gordy served in the South Pacific during WWII and retired 1963. Gordon attended Michigan Tech where he pursued a degree in civil engineering, but returned to the military prior to completion of his degree. During his military career, Gordon served in five major crises in the Army for a total of 20 years of service to his country. Upon retiring from the Army, Gordon was a Hancock police officer until 1966 when he joined the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier. In 1972 Gordon became Postmaster of Hancock retiring in 1978. Gordon and Edna traveled through Europe and the United States during his military career, retiring in Misery Bay, MI. Gordon spent his final five years enjoying Northern New Mexico with his daughter Aliina and her family. Gordon is survived by his three daughters; Theresa Sanford of Misery Bay, MI, Margaret (Joseph) Hinkle of Huntsville Alabama and Aliina (Shawn) Radcliff of Aztec, New Mexico, six grandchildren; Michael Thomas Sanford, Joel Matthew Sanford, Joseph Hinkle III, Anthony Hinkle, Nicholas Radcliff and Jarrett Radcliff, a sister, Grace Lorasch and a brother John Lorasch of Port Edwards, WI as well as several great grand children, nieces and nephews. A memorial mass will be held at the Church of The Resurrection on Saturday September 27th 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Sebastian Ettolil, M.C.B.S. to celebrate. Grave side services will follow at the Toivola Cemetery where Rangers Post #6165 V.F.W. of South Range will hold military rites. Visitation will be held at the Memorial Chapel in Hancock, MI Friday, September 26th from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. where a parish prayer service will be held at 6:30 pm and on Saturday from 10 am until time of services at the church. In lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy the family suggests that memorial be given to the D.A.V. Van % of the Houghton County Veterans Affairs Office.
