Obituary of Harold Haapala Chassell & Houghton Harold W. Haapala, 88, went to sleep early Friday morning, Oct. 3, 2003, at the Highland Home in Jackson, Michigan, where he had been a resident patient since October 2002. Harold was born in Hancock, on May 26, 1915, a son of the late August and Anna (Kandelin) Haapala, and was a graduate of the Hancock High School. He later made his home in Chassell until moving to the Bluff's in Houghton. Harold owned & operated the Haapala Insurance Agency in Chassell for many years until he sold the business and retired. On June 21, 1937, he was united in marriage to the former Elvia Forsman, and she preceded him in death on April 9, 1980. He was very active in the Chassell Community and loved to play baseball, hunt, fish, golf, travel, and was involved in the scouting movement. He also was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell, and the Lions Club. He was also preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Bror and Oscar("Fats") and 2 Sisters: Esther & Sophie. Surviving are: 1 Daughter: Carolyn (Al Neblo) Haapala of Jackson, MI 1 Son: Frederick (Karen) Haapala of Olympia, WA 1 Brother: Eric (Jeanne) Haapala of Southfield, MI 7 Grandchildren: Kristi, Steven, Susan, David, Jill, Joy, & Sara 15 Great Grandchildren: Aaron, Emily, Sarah, Molly, Anna, Derik, Darin, Lacey, Elli, Crina, Natalie, Julia, Nelson, Martin, & Elliot. A Dear Friend: Mrs. Ruth Best of Chassell 2 Sisters-in-law: Mrs. Sylvia (Richard) Rowe of Hancock & Mrs. Marie Ecke of Chassell, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins Funeral services wil be held Tuesday, October 7, 2003, at 1 P.M. in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell with Rev. Jamie Gallagher to officiate. Burial to be in the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock. Friends may call on Monday from 4 to 8 P.M. at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Chassell and from 12 noon until time of services at the church on Tuesday.
