Helen Marcella Niemi

Hancock

     Helen M. Niemi, 88, a resident of Hancock passed away Friday, January 13, 2023, at the Omega House in Houghton following a short illness.

     She was born on March 30, 1934, in Laurium, MI, a daughter of the late Robert and Sylvia (Lyytikainen) Mattson.  Helen was raised in the family farm in Dover Location and was a graduate of the Dollar Bay School.

     Helen was a veteran having served with the United States Air Force in Florida and Texas.

     On September 4, 1959, she was united in marriage to Ron Niemi.  The couple resided in Arcadian Location and had raised their family on the Niemi family farm.  On October 2, 2011, John preceded Helen in death.

     Mrs. Niemi enjoyed working on her flower gardens, doing yard work, raising chickens, and reading.  She was an active member of the Boston Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary for many years and enjoyed visiting with family and friends.

     Preceding her in death were her husband Ron, her parents, her sisters, Ruth Mattson, and Phyllis Kinnunen, her brothers Paul Robert and Marvin.

     Surviving are:

            Her children: Charlie (Lisa) Niemi of Chassell

                                    Donald Niemi of Hancock

                                    Barbara Niemi of Westland, MI

            Her grandchildren:

                        Joshua, Cassie, Zachary, Kyle, Quentin and Amya

            Her sister: Shirley ( Dale ) Perreault of Trap Rock

            Her brother: Richard Mattson a resident patient at Green Tree of Hubbell

            Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins

     A memorial service for Helen will be held 3:00 pm Thursday, January 19, 2023, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Cremation Service – Hancock Chapel with Pastor Mark Halonen to officiate.  Spring burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock.

     Friends may call on Thursday, January 19, 2023, from 2:00 pm until time of services at the Memorial Chapel Funeral & Cremation Service – Hancock Chapel.

     In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests memorial contributions be given to the Omega House in Houghton in memory of Helen Niemi.
