Obituary of Henry R. Hakala Hancock Henry R. "Hank" Hakala, 81, a resident of Roberts St., Hancock, passed away early Tuesday morning August 29, 2006, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born on March 14, 1925, in Askel, a son of the late Nels August and Milia (Onkalo) Hakala. As a child he moved with his family to Isle Royal #2 Location. He then attended the Houghton Schools. Mr. Hakala was a veteran having served with the United States Marine Corp during World War II. After the service Mr. Hakala moved to the Detroit area where he worked in different wielding shops for a few years. He then became an independent over the road truck driver until his retirement in 1985. In 1989 Hank returned to the Copper Country to make his home. Mr. Hakala was united in marriage to Barbara Holden and they parted ways as friends. On October 22, 1989, he was united in marriage to the former Martha Luoma-Luhti. Hank was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock. He was also a very active community person belonging to Alfred Erickson Post #186 American Legion of Hancock, Portage Post #1292 V.F.W. of Houghton where he served as post commander for 5 years, Marine Corp League #1016, Copper Country Lodge #135 F. & A.M.., and Order of Eastern Star Trillium Chapter #304 where he was a past Marshall. Mr. Hakala also was a past member of the Order of Runneberg Lodge #8 of Dollar Bay, former president of the former Copper Country Kiwanis Club (Golden-K), he was a member of the Copper Country Diabetic Chapter, and was a volunteer for Little Brothers Friends of the elderly. Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother Nels E. Hakala. Surviving are: His wife: Martha Hakala of Hancock 1 Step-Son: James (Janice) Holden of Muskegon, MI 2 Step-Grandsons, 5 Step-Great Grandchildren 2 Brothers: Reino Hakala of Chassell Urho (Hazel) Hakala of Montgomery, Al 1 Brother-in-law: Ed Luoma of Hancock 1 Sister-in-law: Aina Luoma of Hancock Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins Funeral services for Hank will be held 11 a.m. Friday September 1, 2006, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock, with Rev. Jimalee Jones to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock where the Copper Country veteran Association will hold military rites.
