Obituary of Hilma Marian Kangas Osceola Marian Kangas, 97, a former resident of Osceola, passed away Saturday September 13, 2008, at Our Lady of Mercy Convalescent Home in Hubbell where she had been a resident patient for the past four months. She was born on February 14, 1911, in Hubbell, a daughter of the late Nicholas and Ida (Hiivila) Nelson. As a child, Marian attended the Dollar Bay School and lived on a farm in the Mason Hill area. As a teenager, she moved to the Detroit area where she found work. On June 29, 1938, she was united in marriage to Werner A. Kangas and he preceded her in death on January 25, 1998. Marian and her family kept a strong connection with the Copper Country by vacationing frequently at their cottage on North Grosse Pointe Shores by Dollar Bay. When she and her husband, Art, retired in 1970, they returned to live in the Copper Country. Marian had worked at a variety of jobs during her time in Detroit and she retired after 10 years at Detroit Bank & Trust. Mrs. Kangas was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Calumet and formerly was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in the Detroit area. While Marian was a member of Emmanuel she was quite active with the church women and the Sunday school program. Preceding her in death where her husband, her parents, and her son Sonny Kangas. Surviving are: Her daughters: Norma Wyatt of West Palm Beach, FL Eve (John) Lindsey of Osceola Township 5 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, & 1 great great grandchild Her sister: Florence Lassila a resident patient at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock Her brother: Reino (Pat) Nelson of Boston Location Several nieces, nephews, and cousins A memorial service for Marian will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday September 16, 2008, at Faith Lutheran Church of Calumet with Rev. Peter Vorhes to officiate. Friends may call on Tuesday September 16, 2008, from 10:30 am until time of services at the church.
