Obituary of I. Churan MRS Pike River District Signe Makinen Churan, 93, a former resident of the Pike River District in Chassell, was called to her heavenly home on Monday, April 25th. During her long term illness, she had been a resident at the Pewabic House of Portage Pointe Nursing Facility in Hancock, since January 2008.She was born on August 23, 1917, in Chassell. She was the eldest daughter of the late Frans Jalmer and Hilma Susanna (Ponteskoski) Makinen. Her father, Jalmer immigrated to the United States in 1909 from Kokemaki, Finland. Her mother, Hilma immigrated from Lapua, Finland in 1911. Signe was raised in Chassell Township, and worked in the area, until she moved to the city in the early 1940's.After Signe moved to Detroit, Michigan, she later worked at Cadillac Motor Car Company. This was a time when all worked for the war effort; her job was that of inspector of various airplane parts. It was there that she met her future husband, Harold T. Churan. Harold was later enlisted in the 13th Army air Force. Harold and Signe were married on July 6, 1943, in St. John's Lutheran Church in Detroit. Harold proceeded her in death in 1968.After Signe's retirement from Michigan Manufacturers Association, it was her wish to once again, live on her parents farm, in her beloved Copper Country. She loved to putter in her flower and vegetable gardens, while in the company of her pets. It was there, that she resided, until she could no longer be left alone.Signe is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Arleen and James Morrissey of Portage Entry in Chassell Township; two grandsons, Roger (Ann) Harris of Allouez, and Steven (Wendy) Harris of Clarkston, Michigan. Four great-grandchildren; Autumn and Amber Harris, Logan and Nathan Harris and a step grandchild, Sheena Rossignol. She is survived by a sister, Saima Makinen Davis of St. Louis, Missouri. She also has numerous nieces and nephews.Beside her parents and husband, Signe was preceded in death by two infant sisters and an infant brother, a sister, Martha Whitver of Walnut, Illinois, and a brother William Makinen of Fitchburg, Massachusetts.Funeral services will be held 11 am, on Saturday, April 30th, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hancock, with Pastor Gerald Southerton, officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy memorials may be sent to Zion Lutheran Church, Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly of Hancock or the Omega House of Houghton.
