Irene Daavettila

Obituary of Irene Daavettila Chassell Irene Esther (Hagert) Daavettila, 92, of Chassell, MI passed away Friday Morning, August 20, 2010. For the last year, Irene lived at Angle's Touch Assisted Living in De Pere WI, near to her two sons Lee and Steven. Irene was born on February 7, 1918 daughter of the late William Hagert and Mary Ann (Niemela) and lived on Summit St. in Hancock, MI. She was the youngest of eight children. She maintained many lifetime friendships with her neighbors on Summit Street. Irene was a 1936 graduate of Hancock High School. After High School she worked at the Book Concern Printing in Hancock. On December 8, 1953 Irene married William (Bill) H. Daavettila. They built a home in Chassell in 1956. Irene had three children Lee, Steven and Joan. The happiest time in her life was raising her family in Chassell. Growing up, Irene enjoyed many outdoor activities and sports including skiing, skating, baseball, basketball, hockey and swimming, She also loved to read. As a young adult, she enjoyed camping with her friends at Twin Lakes and joined the MI Tech Ski Club. Irene played 3rd base for the Stern & Field's Rythemsteppers. Irene often road her bike to her Uncle's farm by Cedar Bay. She loved to travel across the United States on the Greyhound bus. When Irene met her future husband Bill, they were a wonderful match. She found a partner who enjoyed many of the same things. They loved to fish, camp, hunt, pick berries and dance. Both were always ready to go at the drop of a hat. Irene loved being a grandmother to her five grandkids and watching them grow. Irene is survived by her son, Lee (Barb) Daavettila and their sons Ian and Nathan, New Franken; son, Steven (Ruth) Daavettila and their children Cassandra, Hannah and Michael, Green Bay. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. She was especially close to her niece Mary Nell Terrian. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Daavettila; Daughter, Joan E. Daavettila; Parents, William and Marry Hagert; brothers and sisters, Alma, George, Eleanor, Urho (Reynold), Bertha (Betty), William and Neelo. Gathering time for family and friends will be held at Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Chassell, MI on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 from 9:30 - 11:30 am with a brief service to follow.
