Obituary of Irene L. Mayra Hancock On Monday July 14, 2008, the Lord opened the gates of heaven and welcomed his faithful servant Irene L. Mayra home. Irene was loved by many and served as an inspiration to all that knew her. Irene was born on March 30, 1926, and was the daughter of the late Emil and Alida Niemi. She was raised in the Atlantic Mine area and attended Jeffers High School and in her senior year she attended the Houghton High School. After her graduation she attended St. Joseph's school of nursing and became a registered nurse. Irene worked for over twenty years as a private duty nurse at the St. Joseph Hospital in Hancock and retired in 1966. Irene received a certificate of appreciation for participating in Harvard's Medical School's nurses' Health study for over 30 years. In 1947 she was united in marriage to Clarence Mayra. Clarence preceded her in death in 1995. In addition to Clarence she was preceded in death by a son Ronald, her parents; Emil & Alida Niemi; brothers Eino, Norman and John and sisters; Sylvia Lindquist and Ingrid Niemi. Surviving is a daughter Judith (Lloyd) Ravet of Madison, WI, two sons, Mark Mayra of Hancock and Randy (Gretchen) Mayra of Hancock; brothers William (Irene) Niemi of Dearborn, MI, Paul Niemi of Lake Worth, FL, Donald Niemi of Lake, MI, and sisters Jean (Fred) Pernaski of Hancock, Edna Laird of Pasadena, CA, Alice (Morris) Moore of Dearborn, MI, and Selma Mangan of Dearborn, MI, as well as numerous nephews, and nieces. Irene was the proud grandmother of Jospeh Ravet, Brad Ravet, Laura Mayra, Lee Mayra, Jason Mayra, Jeremy Mayra, Christopher Mayra, Kerri Mayra and great grandchildren Kaia Ravet, Quinn Ravet, and Andy Ravet. Irene was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton. Funeral services for Irene will be held 11 a.m. Thursday July 17, 2008 in the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton with Richard Eskola to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeside cemetery of Hancock. Friends may call on Wednesday July 16, 2008, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of the services at 11 a.m. at the church.
