James Carstens

Obituary of James Carstens Hancock James R. Carstens, 65, a resident of Elm St., Hancock, passed away at home on Monday evening October 27, 2003, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Carstens was born on June 17, 1938, in Columbia, Missouri, a son of the late Kenneth and Evelyn (Emory) Carstens. As a child he was raised in the Alton, Illinois area and graduated from the Alton High School. After high school Mr. Carstens attended the University of Indiana- Bloomington before going to work for the McDonnell Douglass Corporation on the Mercury Space Project, from there he attended Missouri School of Mines where he received a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering. On September 12, 1964, he was united in marriage to the former Sandra Dobbs. Jim moved to LaCrosse, Wisconsin to work for Trane Corporation. In 1974 he began working for Michigan Technological University with the School of Technology, and moved to Eagle River, Michigan. In 1981 he moved to Holland , MI to work for the Prince Company until 1984. In 1985 he moved to Hancock, MI and returned to Michigan Technological University where he has taught in the School of Technology as Associate Professor of Mechanical Design Engineering Technology until he retired in 2001. Jim loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, being an Amateur Radio Operator under the call sign W8LTL, studying the weather, studying Astronomy, practicing Photography, being in the outdoors and traveling. Surviving are: His wife: Sandy 2 Daughters: Signe Carstens of Hancock Lesley (William) O'Kane of Hancock 2 Grandchildren: Jacob and Hannah O'Kane 1 Brother: Frederick (Peggy) Carstens of Massillon, OH Several Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins A memorial service for Jim will be held on Tuesday November 4, 2003, at 11 A.M. at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock with Rev. Jimalee Jones to officiate. In lieu of flowers or others expressions of sympathy the family suggests that memorials be given to the Omega House or the American Cancer Society.
