Obituary of Janice Heather Hancock A private memorial service was held today for Janice Silvola Heather who died on Monday, October 27, 2008. The picture you see here is of a young healthy Janice, with all the hopes and dreams of one not yet plagued with the insidious disease, cancer. Janice was born on June 3, 1935 to Raymond and Aileen (Oger) Silvola. She is survived by one sister, Joan (Dave) Mechlin, nephews Doug (Kristina Mechlin, Al (Candi) Silvola, Ed Silvola, and Peter (Shody) Silvola and one niece, Karin (Jeff) Hetcher, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Roger Silvola, and a niece, Margaret Mechlin Solinski. Janice graduated from Jeffer's High School in 1953. She received a Bachelor's Degree from Michigan Tech in 1957 and a Masters Degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1967, consistently achieving Dean's List Status. She continued her education at Wayne State University, with emphasis on biomedical disciplines. Her college degrees enabled her to work first as a medical technologist, then as the head librarian of the chemistry library at the University of Wisconsin, The Upjohn Company in Pharmaceutical Research, and more recently as a medical librarian locally. She was a member of several professional organizations. Janice's greatest pride was her family. She carried on many family traditions, one of which was presenting each newborn niece and nephew with an engraved silver cup. She cherished the time spent at holidays with her family. She also took pride in her Finnish heritage and was a member of the Finnish Council in America at Finlandia University. Her quiet but strong nature will be remembered, as will the love that she showered on her family. Yes, she was a valiant woman. The family wishes to thank the many friends who expressed kindness throufgout Janice's illness. Instead of forwarding messages of sympathy, please vow to see the goodness in other people, smile at strangers, be a friend to someone in need. The Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock has been assisting the family with arrangements. To send flowers to the family of Janice Heather, please visit Tribute Store
