Obituary of Jean Medlyn HoughtonJean Louise Medlyn, 89, a former resident of Houghton passed away November, 6, 2010, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock where she had been a resident patient for two months. She was born on April 8, 1921, in Laurium, MI, a daughter of the late Edward and Edna (Nordstrom) Medlyn. As a child, she moved to the Houghton area and graduates from Houghton High School with the class of 1939. Jean also attended Soumi College, graduated from Marquette Normal College (Northern Michigan University) and National College of Education in Evanston, IL, where she received a degree to teach kindergarten.Ms. Medlyn had taught school at the John A. Doelle School in Tapiola and then at the Houghton Elementary School, where she retired in 1984 after 38 years of teaching. Jean would often recall her student teaching days at Hull House in Chicago, IL.Jean was a member of the Hurontown Methodist Church until it's closing. She then became a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Houghton. She was also a member of the Teacher's Sorority Alpha Delta Kappa of the Copper Country. Jean enjoyed bowling, traveling and swimming in Lake Superior.Preceding her in death were her parents, her brothers Emory, Arthur, Philip, and her sisters Marjorie Trevillyan and Marion Verran.Surviving are: Her sister: Nina Cox of Houghton Her sister-in-law: Jeannette Medlyn of HoughtonNumerous nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.A memorial service for Jean will be held 1 pm Friday May 13, 2011, at Grace United Methodist Church of Houghton with Rev. David Goudie to officiate.
