Obituary of Jean Mikkola-Miller HoughtonJean I. Mikkola-Miller, 90, a resident the Bluffs Senior Living Community and a former resident of Hancock and Portage Entry passed away Sunday evening September 4, 2011, at Cypress Manor Nursing Home in Hancock where she had been a resident patient for the past month. She was born on July 6, 1921, in Laurium, a daughter of the late Andrew and Elena (Huesa) Murtomaki. At a very young age she moved with her family to Baraga where she graduated from the Baraga High School with the class of 1938.Jean was employed with the Baraga Telephone Company until 1943 when she was united in marriage to Toivo Mikkola. The couple made their home in Portage Entry. Toivo preceded Jean in death in 1989. In 1999 she was united in marriage to Gunnar Miller, the couple resided in Hancock. Gunnar preceded Jean in death in 2001.In 1966 Jean began working for Superior National Bank retiring as Vice President of the Baraga branch in 1988.Jean was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell where she was active with the Quilters and Women's Guild of the church. She also was active with Friends of Fashion in Chassell, the Women's Study Club, Chassell Senior Citizens, and Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly. Jean enjoyed reading, doing all kinds of Handiwork and helping people.Preceding her in death were her parents, her brother Carl, her step sister Alice and step-brother Vernon, and her sisters; Fern Ohtonen and Martha Mikkola.Surviving are: Her children: Paul (Pam) Mikkola of Bedford, New HampshireLinda (David) Kantola of Portage Entry Nancy (William) Plante of Hancock Karl (Gina) Mikkola of Mesa, ArizonaHer grandchildren:Karen Swager, Dr. Maija Mikkola-Curtis, Lori Miller, Jennifer Welch, Shawn Holman, Wendy Mattson, Holly Mattson, Andrew Mattson, Angela Beauchamp, Anya Hazlett, Toivo Mikkola, Brandon Blessum and Chuck Blessum16 great grandchildren2 nieces and 1 nephew A memorial service for Jean will be held 11 am Saturday September 10, 2011, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell with Rev.
