Chassell
Jeffrey Russell Liimatta (Chassell, Michigan) passed away quietly Saturday afternoon September 9, 2023 in UP Health System–Marquette. He had a sudden and unexpected health issue from which he could not recover. Jeff was born June 2, 1958 (65) in Detroit, Michigan, the 2nd son of Rev Elmer R. and Ruth E. Liimatta. He was raised in Detroit and Southfield, Michigan where his father was an Apostolic Lutheran minister. Being raised in the church, Jeff was baptized, attended all his primary years of Sunday school, was confirmed and believed in the Christian faith.
Jeff was a successful diver on the Southfield High School swim team, graduated from Oakland Community College, and then the University of Minnesota with a bachelor of arts degree in English. He went on to pursue a master's degree at Minnesota and MTU as well. He moved to Chassell, Michigan in 1991. In Chassell he pursued woodworking and carpentry jobs for family, friends and local customers. In the mid-1990s he established his own small woodshop taking great pride in delivering woodworking and carpentry projects for his customers in the Copper Country. Jeff loved the outdoors and spent a lot of time fishing in the area, hunting deer in the fall, and enjoying the full “northwoods” experience with family and friends in the area.
Jeff was preceded in death by his brother Steve (Jake), and his parents Elmer and Ruth Liimatta. He is survived by his brothers Daniel, Kevin (Kathy) and Mark. As we reflect on the loss of our brother, we send him on his way with the peace of our Lord. Rest in peace brother. No service is planned at this time, and Jeff will be interred with his parents and brother in Chassell Cemetery. The Memorial Chapel Funeral & Cremation Service–Hancock Chapel has been assisting the family with the arrangements.
