Obituary of Joan Kathleen Nicholls HOUGHTON Joan Kathleen Nicholls passed away May 31, 2017. She was born in Hancock on November 25, 1931 to Edward and Ann (Manderfield) Cahoon. A graduate of Houghton High School, she also attended Suomi College (Finlandia University) and Michigan Technological University. Kathleen was united in marriage to William L. (Red) Nicholls in 1950 and lived in the Marquette area for six years, returning to Houghton in 1956. She retired from the Upper Peninsula Power Company in 1989, after 23 years in the billing, accounting, and data processing departments. Kathleen was a lifelong member of St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Houghton. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mom, grandma, and great-grandma. She was a tremendous cook and baker, and she loved spending time with her family. Kathleen was a role model and also taught her family the lessons of hard work and attention to detail. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998; parents, two brothers, Tom and David; sister, Virginia; and son, Stephen. She is survived by three daughters, Patricia (James) Destrampe, Emily (Dennis) Walikainen, and Deborah (David) Dow; five grandchildren, Amanda (Jeff) Beneteau, Rebecca (John) Ylitalo, Laura (Mark) Rouleau, Elizabeth Dow, and John Walikainen; seven great-grandchildren, Connor, Maya, and Tyler Ylitalo; Caden and Avery Beneteau; and Ann and Henri Rouleau; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. A private mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Houghton, and burial will be at Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.
