Obituary of John Joseph Gagnon Chassell John J. Gagnon, 86, a resident of Willson Memorial Dr., Chassell, passed away Wednesday evening May 16, 2007, at Bayside Village in L'Anse where he had been a resident patient for over the past 3 years. He was born on August 5, 1920, in Chassell a son of the late John and Mary (Belhumer) Gagnon. As a child he attended the Chassell Schools. Mr. Gagnon was a veteran having served with the United States Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Mt. Vernon with the 15th division. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer after 20 years of service. On August 14, 1938, he was united in marriage to the former Sylvia Maki. John was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church of Chassell, served as president of the Chassell Twp. School Board for 12 years and on the Intermediate School District Board for 18 years. John was a member of Post #6507 V.F.W. of Chassell, Sauvola Post #265 American Legion of Chassel, and a founding member of the Chassell Fire Department. John had worked at Michigan Technological University as a Senior Teaching, Training Specialist & Shop Supervisor in the Chemical & Electrical Departments, retiring after 26 years. Preceding him in death where his parents, one son, two sisters, and 1 brother. Surviving are: His wife, Sylvia of Chassell 1 Son; Michael (Linda) Gagnon of Chassell 2 Grandsons & 1 Great-grandson 1 Sister-in-law: Marie Gagnon of Hancock Several nieces, nephews, and cousins A private graveside service for John will be held Friday May 18, 2007, in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton, with Fr. Larry VanDamme to officiate. In lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy the family suggests that memorials may be given to St. Anne's Catholic Church of Chassell or the charity of ones choice.
