John Garber

Obituary of John Benton Garber Hancock John B. Garber, a resident of Lakeview Manor in Hancock, passed away on Saturday, June 9th, 2007 at the Omega House in Houghton. John was born on February 9, 1926, in Neosho, Missouri, the only son of I.A. Garber and Mildred Ruth Quigley Garber. His educational experience began as a graduate of Monett High School, Monett, Missouri in 1944. He did Bachelors Studies at Drury University, Springfield, Missouri 1946-1950. Master Studies at the University of Michigan 1954-1964 and Doctoral Studies, Michigan State University 1968-1972. He served in the United States Navy 1944-46 and 1951-52. John's professional experience began at the Flint, Michigan Community Schools as a teacher of Social Studies 1952-56, Counselor 1956-60, Dean of Students 1960-62 and Principal for Instruction 1962-68. He next became a University of Michigan, Mott Inter-University Clinical Preparation Program Intern 1969-1970. This was followed as a Michigan State University, Mott Institute for Community Improvement Intern 1970-71. He then was employed by Northern Michigan University, Mott Inter-University Clinical Preparation Program Assistant Professor1971-72. He served as Director of Northern Michigan University, Mott Center for Community Education 1972-80. His final employment was with the Michigan Department of Education as a Consultant, Community Education Specialist 1980-81. He retired in 1981. His affiliations with organizations included Deacon and Elder of Presbyterian Church U.S.A., Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Alpha Theta, Phi Delta Kappa, N.M.U. Chapter and it's President 1972-74, Lambda Chi Alpha, Michigan Education Association Life Member including serving on Board of Directors 1958-64, Life Member of National Education Association, Michigan Associations for Public Adult and Community Education, National Community Education Association of retired person, Calumet Village Council 1993-95 where he had positions of Trustee and President Pro-Tem, Finance Committee Chairman and Personal Committee Chairman CLK Foresight 1991-93, Calumet Partners, Keweenaw Historic Park, 1993-99, Keweenaw National Historic Park Advisory Commission 1998-2000, Hancock Housing Commission since 2001 with being President in 2003 and currently serving as Vice President, Hancock Public Transit Authority, Sub-Committee 2003-05 and Hancock Housing Foundation Trustee since 2005 as it's President since 2005. He was preceded in death by his father and mother I.A. Garber and Mildred Ruth Quigley Garber of Cassville Missouri and a sister, Phyllis Garber Kendall of Crockett, Texas. He is survived by two sons John Collier Garber of Dallas, Texas and Bruce Quigley Garber of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Also surviving are nieces, Caryl Kendall White of Bedford, Texas, and Faith Kendall Hepner of Arlington, Texas and two grand nieces, Sheralyn Hepner of Arlington Texas and Charity Hepner Jones of DarEssalaam, Tanzania, Africa. A memorial service for John will be held in the Community Room of Lake View Manor at 4 p.m. Wednesday June 13, 2007. In lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy memorials are suggested to be given to the Hancock Housing Foundation at 1401 Quincy St., Hancock, MI 49930 of the Omega House at 2211 Maureen Lane, Houghton, MI 49931. Another memorial service will be held at a later date at the Presbyterian Church of Marquette. John's cremains will be interred in the Memorial Garden of the church as part of the memorial service.
