John Nerg

Obituary of John Nerg Chassell John "Fred" Nerg, 84, a resident of Chassell, passed away early Thursday morning, Sept. 9, 2004, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, where he had been a resident patient for the past week. He was born on August 7, 1920, in Chassell, a son of the late Charles and Hulda (Sormunen) Nerg and attended the local schools. Mr. Nerg had been employed as a mechanic and heavy equipment operator for the former Thornton Construction Co. of Hancock, and for A. Lindberg & Sons Construction Co. out of Marquette. On April 1, 1961, he was united in marriage to the former Esther (Huhta) Narva, and she preceded him in death on February 1, 1990. Freddy was a life member of the Chassell V.F.W. Post #6507 of Chassell, the American Legion Post #265 of Chassell, the Michigan Trappers Association, and a 50 year member of the Operating Engineers. He was a veteran of W.W. II, serving with the United States Army as construction equipement operator on Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Hokkaido, Japan while in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 16, 1946. He was also preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, Carl; 1 brother-in-law, Paul Verhines; and a sister-in-law, Connie Nerg. Surviving are: 1 Son: Thomas T. Narva of Apache Junction, AZ. 1 Daughter: Ann (Michael) Soumis of Houghton 3 Grandchildren: Corey (Trista) Soumis of Chassell Carrie (Brad) Lystila of Chassell Thomas T. Narva Jr. of Apache Junction, AZ. 2 Great Grandchildren: Hannah Soumis & Cole Lystila both of Chassell 3 Brothers: Toivo (Lillian) Nerg of Chassell Kenneth Nerg of Chassell Roy Nerg of Frankfort, MI 1 Sister: Mildred Verhines of Addison, MI. 1 Sister-in-law: Vera Nerg of Cheboygan, MI numerous nieces, nephews, & cousins Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at 11 A.M. at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Chassell with Rev. Elmer Liimatta to officiate. Burial to be in the Chassell Cemetery. The V.F.W. Post #6507 of Chassell will hold military services.
