Houghton
John M. Serbinski, a resident of Houghton, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at 58 years old due to heart complications. He spent the last several years in his favorite place on Earth – the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, specifically Copper Country. He was born on September 3, 1964, in Hancock, Michigan and spent his childhood in Houghton. He was a wonderful storyteller and had many stories (some true and some a little exaggerated) about growing up playing hockey, taking hikes, going fishing, reading and cooking; all pastimes he shared with those he cared about.
He graduated from Houghton High School and went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree from Ferris State University. John resided in various cities throughout the Midwest including Chicago, Detroit, and Cincinnati. He made friends everywhere he went, whether sitting at a restaurant drinking coffee or walking down the aisle at the grocery store. He was active in the Catholic church community but also found the backwoods to be one of the best places to spend time with God. In his own words, “God is the rich, omnipresent substance of the universe.”
John is the son of the late Gerald and Jane (Verville) Serbinski and is survived by his two sisters Karen (Blake) Gentile and Susan Serbinski. John has four children with Diane Rodgers - Carolyn (Ryan Rasulis) Serbinski, Steven (Sabrina) Serbinski, Christine Serbinski, and Michael Serbinski. He was immensely proud of them and loved them dearly.
John often said he wanted to be a centenarian - if you round up to the nearest 100, he made it. (His kids learned to exaggerate stories as well).
As requested, no service will take place at this time. Spending some time outdoors would be the perfect way to honor and celebrate his life.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s name to the Isle Royale Wolf-Moose Project (https://isleroyalewolf.org/participate/participate/our_needs.html).
