Leo Niemela

Obituary of Leo Leonard Niemela Skanee Leo Leonard Niemela, 78, a resident of Skanee passed away Wednesday morning April 25, 2007, at the Marquette General Hospital. He was born on February 16, 1929, in Pilgrim District, a son of the late John and Ina (Hongisto) Niemela, as a child he attended the Pilgrim School. He was a veteran having served in the United States Army during the Korean War. On September 14, 1951, he was united in marriage to the former Doris Anderson in Detroit. Leo was a member of the Chassell Apostolic Lutheran Church. Mr. Niemela had resided in the Detroit area where he owned and operated Stainless Dies by Niemela until he relocted back to the copper country in 1968. Leo has since owned and operated Northern Farm Dairy in Chassell, The Super 8 Motel in Baraga, and presently was partners in Northern Tool & Engineering also in Baraga. Leo loved to create the impossible. Preceding him in death where his parents and 6 brothers & sisters: Emma, Martha, Bertha, Aldrick, Esther, Marvin and 2 still born Granddaughters. Surviving are: His wife Doris Niemela of Chassell Children: Carol (Robert) Salmi of Chassell Jerome (Rebecca) Niemela of Chassell Mark (Eva) Niemela of Keweenaw Bay Lois ( Albert) Matson of Yacolt, WA 38 Grandchildren 38 Great Grandchildren 1 Sister: Ina Mae Somero of New Ipswich, NH 2 Brothers: Wallace (Elna) Niemela of Chassell Ralph (Helen) Niemela of Fitzwilliam, NH Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends Funeral services for Leo will be held 11 a.m. Monday April 30, 2007, at the Tapiola Apostolic Lutheran Church with Donald Holombo to officiate. Burial will be in the Jacobsville Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday April 29, 2007, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Chassell and on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church.
