Obituary of Leonard Karppinen Leonard H. Karppinen, 83, a former resident of Atlantic Street, Hancock, and Chassell, passed away Thursday evening, September 11, 2003, at the Cypress Manor Nursing Home in Hancock, where he had been a resident patient since December 27, 1996. He was born on December 15, 1919, in Chassell, a son of the late Severus and Ida (Junttila) Karppinen, and was a graduate of the Chassell High School. Leonard had worked at the Chassell Post Office for 28 years. Before that he had worked on the Railroad, Packard Motor Company, and for Northwest Potato Farms. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Army. Leonard was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton, a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post #6507, of Chassell, and a lifetime member of the D.A.V. Surviving are: 2 Nieces, 1 Nephew, and numerous cousins Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 17, 2003, at 11 A.M. in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock, with Richard Eskola to officiate.
