Obituary of Lillian Marttila Houghton Mrs. Lillian I. Marttila, 84, a former resident of Houghton, and presently of Iron Mountain, passed away Sunday, October 3, 2004, at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain, MI where she was a patient for 1 day. The former Lillian Ylitalo was born in Calumet on December 15, 1919, a daughter of the late John Benjamin and Hilja (Elki) Ylitalo. She later resided in Detroit, Liminga, Houghton for several years, and in Hancock, before moving to Iron Mountain in 1998. Her husband, Oscar, and herself were the former owners of the Portage Lake Cabins. Lillian was employed at the former J.C. Penney Store in Downtown Houghton, as Shoe Sales Manager. She was married to the former Oscar S. Marttila on March 27, 1937, and he preceded her in death on January 30, 2000. She was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church of Hancock, and the A.A.R.P. Also preceding her in death was a son, Gerald. Surviving are: 1 Son: Thomas (Carrie) Marttila of Iron Mountain 1 Daughter-in-law: Laverne Marttila of Lynchberg, Virgina 6 Grandchildren: Daniel, Robin(Jennifer), Kevin, Brent, Shari (David), Renee (Tom) 2 Great Grandchildren Several nieces, nephews, & cousins Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at 1:30 P.M. in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock, with Rev. Gerry Southerton to officiate. Burial to be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton. Friends may call on Tuesday from 6 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home in Hancock.
