Lillian Niemi

Obituary of Lillian Johanna Niemi Hancock Lillian J. Niemi, 91, a resident of Liberty St., Hancock, passed away late Monday morning February 12, 2007, at her home following a short illness. She was born on June 28, 1915, in Hancock a daughter of the late Walter and Ida (Liinangi) Kero. Lillian was a graduate of the Hancock High School with the class of 1933, and also graduated from Soumi College with the class of 1934. Lillian moved to the Detroit area and worked for Hudson Motor until moving back to the Copper Country to help take care of her ailing mother. She retired in 1980 from Soumi College where she had worked in the food services program. On August 24, 1940 she was united in marriage to Wallace F. Niemi and he preceded her in death in 1974. Together they had resided in Coles Creek, and then moved to Onnela to raise their family. Lillian moved back to her family home in Hancock in 1974 and has resided there since that time. Mrs. Niemi was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Atlantic Mine, and a Life Member of Trillium Chapter #304 Order of the Eastern Star. She was also preceded in death by her brother William. Surviving are: 1 Daughter: Phyllis (Thomas) Burge of Manistique, MI 3 Sons: Raymond Niemi of Hancock Kenneth (Carolyn) Niemi of Atlantic Mine Michael (Susan) Niemi of Ripley 20 Grandchildren, 40 Great Grandchildren Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins Funeral services for Lillian will be held 11 a.m. this Thursday February 15, 2007, in the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton with Paul Isaacson to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Liminga Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday February 14, 2007, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church.
