Lillian Bertha Pouttu

Chassell

Lillian Pouttu, 97, a resident of Canal View, passed away on November 29, 2022.  She was born on September 9, 1925, to Emil and Minnie Pelto of Rhode Island Location.  She attended the Boston Location School, and then graduated from Hancock Central in 1943.  After graduation, Lillian went to Detroit, where she was employed as a bookkeeper at J.L. Hudson Company and Paramount Pictures. 

            She married Veikko Pouttu in 1955.  The family moved back to the Copper Country in 1965 and settled in the Suo District.  She was employed at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility, retiring after 20 years of service in 1990. 

            She was a member of the South Range Eagles for 32 years and the Keweenaw Detachment Marine Corps Auxiliary.  She was also a previous member of the AFSCME Union.

            In life, she enjoyed her home and family, and many chats on her porch with friends and relatives.  She was a very giving and caring person.

            Surviving are a daughter, Marilyn Pesola of L’Anse, grandchildren Victor Pesola of Detroit and Leanne Pesola of Tapiola, and a 

special friend Tracy Smith of Chassell.  She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, many friends, and relatives of Finland. 

            Preceding her in death were her husband Veikko, her sons Jack and Frank Pouttu.  She was also predeceased by her parents, her eight brothers, Bill, John, Albert, Fred, Ed, Rudy, Matt, and Eino Pelto, and three sisters, Senia Franttila, Mary Moore, and Mae Gustafson. 

           A funeral service for Lillian will be held 11:00 am Saturday, December 3, 2022, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Chassell with rev. Soren Schmidt to officiate.   Burial will take place later this spring.

          Friends may call on Saturday, December 3, 2022, from 10:00 am until time of services at the Memorial Chapel Funeral & Cremation Service - Chassell Chapel
