Obituary of Lloyal Orrin Bacon HANCOCK ? Lloyal O. Bacon, 92, a resident of Pilgrim Road in Houghton, died Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at Omega House in Houghton where he had been a resident for over the past day following a brief illness. He was born December 11, 1915, in Hakkon County, S.D., where his parents had taken a homestead in 1909. The second of three brothers, at the age of three he moved with his family to a farm in southern Minnesota, where his parents resided until their deaths in the 1960's. Lloyal attended the University of Minnesota, obtaining a BS in Geological Engineering in 1941. After going to work for U.S. Steel Corp. in South Chicago, he left there three weeks after Pearl Harbor to work for the U.S. Navy Department, Underwater Ordinance. Subsequently, he worked for the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Butler Brothers Mining Co., and Pennsylvania State College (now Pennsylvania State University) as a geophysicist. In 1948, he recieved an MS degree in Geophysics at Penn State. He remained there for another year on a Ph.D program. After the department faculty left, he took employment as a geophysicist at MTU (at that time known as the Michigan College of Mining and Technology) in the fall of 1949. He remained at MTU until his retirement in 1978. Loyal did consulting work in mining geophysics for many companies for over 40 years, finally calling it quits in 1988. His first wife, Elaine (Pearson) Bacon, died December 28, 1989, three days after their 48th wedding anniversary. He is survived by his wife, Andrea (Olsen) Hauge Bacon, whom he married March 23, 1991; his four daughters, Diane (Thomas) Cavis of Holmen, Wis., Marlys Bacon (Wayne Higgins) of Calumet, Patricia Bacon of Hancock and Austin, Texas; and Sherrill (Richard) Fulner of Cumberland, Wis.; as well as by his two sons, Richard (Anne) Bacon of Alanson, Mich. and James (Carol) Bacon of Becker, Minn., step-sons, Soren Hauge (Kat Griffith) and Leif Hauge (Jean Ferdinandsen). Loyal is also survived by 12 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Carroll (Luella) Bacon of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 19, at 2 p.m. Lloyal's ashes will be scattered on a family lakeside plot at the home of Marlys and her husband, Wayne Higgins.
