Obituary of Louis Owen Houghton Louis B. Owen, 67, a resident of Houghton passed away unexpectedly Sunday January 1, 2012, at his home. He was born on February 18, 1944, in Detroit, MI, a son of Betty (Slotkin) Owen and the late George Owen. Louis graduated from Farmington High School, received his BA in Education from Western Michigan University and his MA in History from Northern Michigan University. Mr. Owen was employed as a History Teacher for the L'Anse Area Schools, retiring in 2000 after 32 years. Since 1986, he has made his home in Houghton. On February 25,1967, Louis was united in marriage to the former Elizabeth Irwin. Mr. Owen was a member of Temple Jacob. Lou was an avid fly fisherman and an international chess master. He would spend as much time as he could on the Pilgrim River, fly fishing, catching and releasing the fish he caught, hardly ever getting skunked. He also was a very gifted chess player, winning the national USCF Absolute Championship in 1992. He also was active with the local chapter of Trout Unlimited. Preceding him in death were his father. Surviving are his wife: Elizabeth Owen of Houghton His children: Nathan (Deborah) Owen of Grand Rapids Barbara (Brian) Irizarry of Walsdorf, Germany His grandchildren: Leslie, Hannah, Jackson and Owen His mother: Betty Owen of Bloomfield Hills, MI His brother: Charles (Marsha) Owen of Farmington Hills, MI Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins A private memorial service for Louis will be held later this spring. The family suggests that memorials for Louis should be directed to either the Copper Country Humane Society or the Pilgrim River Watershed Project.
