Obituary of Louise Smith Chassell Louise Elizabeth Smith, 80, a resident of Hancock Street, Chassell, passed away late Monday evening, March 14, 2005, at the Portage Health System Hospital, where she had been a patient for the past 9 days. The former Louise Elizabeth Pakkala was born in Dodgeville on April 14, 1924, to the late Alex and Ethel (Saarela) Pakkala. She was a graduate of the Houghton High School, with the Class of 1942. Miss Pakkala had worked at a war plant in Detroit in 1943, and later accepted a job for Bell Telephone Co. in Lansing. She was united in marriage to Arthur W. Smith on May 15, 1945, and he preceded her in death on November 15, 1988. They lived in Lansing until 1966, when they moved to Dollar Bay where they operated the Northland Food Store until 1969, when they returned to the Lansing area. They also ran a store in Lansing in the early 60's. Louise returned to the Copper Country in 1992 and has resided in the Chassell area since that time. She worked at various jobs in Lansing and was a Girl Scout Leader and helped a Senior Citizens Group called the 39ers. She had an outstanding personality and loved gardening, cross word puzzles, & most of all people. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, 4 brothers; Roy, Leslie, Gordon, Clarence, and 1 Brother & 2 Sisters in infancy; Arnold, Stella, and Irene. Louise was a member of the Maranatha Church of Chassell. Surviving are: 1 daughter: Bethany (Mark) Unrue of Holland, MI 1 Sister: Laura Cote of Chassell 2 Brothers: Earl (Anita) Pakkala of Toivola Ronald (Carolyn) Pakkala of Lansing A special friend: Pat Tulikangas of Houghton Numerous nieces, nephews & friends Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 P.M. in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Chassell with Pastor Dean Franz to officiate. Burial to be in the Deepdale Cemetery in Lansing.
