Obituary of Margaret Lindgren Hancock Margaret C. Lindgren, 81, a resident of Hancock passed away Thursday morning May 13, 2010, at the Portage Hospital in Hancock where she had been a patient for the past week. She was born on June 18, 1928, in Calumet, a daughter of the late John and Mary (Schultz) Elenich. Margaret was raised in Rambletown and attended the Calumet Schools. While employed at the Ely and Walker Dress Factory in Houghton, Margaret met Raymond Lindgren, whom she married on September 2, 1948. Ray preceded Margaret in death on December 24, 2006. The couple first resided in Houghton and in 1955 moved to Hancock, where she has resided since. Margaret was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock. In its early years, when the church was originally known as St. Matthews Church, Margaret was responsible for ringing the church bell for the Finnish and English services. This bell is now located in the Memorial Park adjacent to Gloria Dei. Margaret was also a member of Portage Post #1292 VFW Auxiliary, where she was an active Color Bearer for many years. In addition, she was a member of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, in support of her son, John. Margaret enjoyed playing bingo and listening to old time songs. She treasured her grandchildren and valued the special times they shared together. Many will remember her as a kind, patient, and soft-spoken person that was always gracious and had a caring smile. Preceding her in death were her husband Ray; her son John; her sisters Mary Kump, Frances Smith, and Anna Gerdesich; her brothers John Elenich and Joseph Elenich. Surviving include two daughters, Ivy (Ralph) Heikka of Plymouth, WI and Catherine (Steve) Jordan of Plymouth, WI; one son, Thomas (Debbie) Lindgren of L'Anse; eight grandchildren; Tina (George) Lahti of L'Anse, Jason (Angie) Lindgren of Marquette, Andrew Lindgren of L'Anse, Zachary, Adam and Austin Jordan of Plymouth, WI , Amy McBride of Denver, CO and Donald Heikka of Denver, CO; seven great grandchildren, Trystan and Kolby Lahti of L'Anse, Brenden, Anna, and Carter Lindgren of Marquette, and Griffin and Kylie Heikka of Denver, CO; one brother, Frank Elenich of Calumet; one sister, Agnes Herminath of New London, WI and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral Services for Margaret will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday May 19, 2010, at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock with Rev. Jimalee Jones to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock. Friends may call on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock and on Wednesday from 12 noon until time of services at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock. The family of Margaret Lindgren would like to express a special "thank you" to the many that sent cards, visited her, and to the staff members of the Houghton County Medical Care Facility for their caring and compassionate support during Margaret's five year residency.
